Stainless Steel Chicken Cone: A Safer, Easier Way to Harvest Poultry

You may have seen — or used — old plastic gallon jugs or even traffic cones as makeshift equipment for dispatching backyard meat birds. The idea is sound: When chickens are turned upside-down, they quickly calm down. Plus, the cones enclose and cradle the birds, further soothing them to prevent damage to the wings and bruising to the meat. Mounted at the proper height, they allow easy access to the chicken’s neck.

There are a few downsides to these DIY cones, however. They may not be sturdy enough to safely hold the bird. You need to devise a way to mount them on a vertical surface. And, most importantly, they’re nearly impossible to thoroughly clean and disinfect.

Our Roots & Harvest Chicken Cone is a better choice.

  • It’s crafted from stainless steel, which is easy to clean and can be disinfected with a bleach solution.
  • Stainless steel is sturdy, long-lasting, and will never rust.
  • It features a flat side and two pre-drilled holes, so it’s easy to securely attach to a fence post, tree, or barn wall.
  • The rolled edges protect hands and prevent harm to birds.
  • It’s suitable for chickens weighing up to 10 lbs.

If you raise a large number of meat birds and/or plan to raise birds for a number of years, you’ll appreciate the design and sturdiness of our Chicken Cone. In addition to streamlining the harvesting process, it also helps you give your birds as respectful and humane an end as possible while saving you the hassle and cost of sending chickens to a processor. Many people consider processing their own backyard poultry an essential step on the path to self-sufficiency. It invites a deep connection to the birds and an appreciation for the nourishment they provide.
