Making your own herb seasoning salt sounds fancy, doesn’t it? Thankfully, fancy doesn’t mean hard. The key to creating the perfect seasoning is starting with quality herbs and salt and getting creative with your favorite combinations. You can customize your herb seasoning salt to suit your preferences and dishes.

One of the best parts? By making your own herb seasoning, you can omit the questionable ingredients often found in store-bought seasoning salts. Herb Seasoning Salt for gifts

Homemade herb seasoning salts are not only delicious but also make great gifts. Whether you’re bringing a hostess gift, or a present for someone who enjoys cooking, a jar of this seasoning salt is always appreciated. It’s the perfect homemade gift that shows thoughtfulness and creativity. To wrap your herb-infused salt gift, use string, scissors, parchment paper, and a mason jar or airtight container. It adds a personal touch, and the packaging can be customized to match your style or color palette.

What type of salt to use

For the best flavor, I recommend coarse sea salt or coarse kosher salt. I personally love using Maldon Sea Salt—the large flakes are not only visually appealing but also add a wonderful taste to the seasoning. You can find it easily online! They also offer a smoked salt variety, which is perfect for BBQ rubs and roast vegetables.

Where to get your herbs

For the best results, you want to use fresh herbs or high-quality dried herbs. If you can, grow your own herbs at home—it’s a great way to ensure maximum freshness and flavor. Packaging

Aesthetics matter, especially when gifting. Use butcher paper, twine, and jar lids to give your homemade herb salt a charming, rustic look. If you want to add a personal touch, include a recipe card that explains how to use the herb seasoning salt on dishes like pasta, pork chops, or as a finishing salt for pasta dishes and veggies.

Ingredients you’ll need:

Again, if you find you don’t have some of these, feel free to omit them, or sub for something you have that would work well in a savory mix.

  • 3/4 cup Large flake salt

  • 2 tablespoons rosemary

  • a few peppercorns

  • 2 teaspoons garlic salt

  • 2 tablespoons dried onion pieces

  • 2 teaspoons parsley

  • dash paprika

  • 2 teaspoons sage

  • 1/4 teaspoon chili flakes

Instructions to Assemble Herb Seasoning Salt

  1. Pour your salt mixture into a small bowl.

  2. Add all your herbs on top of the salt. Stir until everything is mixed evenly.

  3. Using a canning funnel or spoon, scoop the herb salt into a glass jar or airtight container.

  4. Secure the lid, and for an extra touch, cover it with parchment paper and tie it with string. Add a tag if you’re gifting it!

Think outside the box

You can create your own homemade flavored salts by experimenting with different combinations of dried herbs and spices. For example, try making homemade rosemary salt or adding a touch of lemon zest and black pepper to create a bright, flavorful blend. You could even try blending the herbs in a food processor for a finer consistency.

Storage and Shelf Life

Your homemade herb salt should be stored in an airtight container in a cool place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. The shelf life is typically around 6 months, but the herbs will start to lose their potency after that. I rotate my herb blends seasonally, swapping out lighter, fresh herb mixes for roast vegetables and meats during the winter months.
